FAQ

Tell me about:-

Currencies

Foundry products can presently be purchased in three different currencies; the currency relating to the purchase will be dependent on the delivery address of the goods themselves.

Our  website initially assumes that the customer delivery address is  in the same country as his server provider; if the country delivery  address is different from this for any reason (the goods may be  a gift to someone in another country or the customer might want  them sent directly to the painter in another country for  example) then the website will notify the customer that the  currency is being changed and then automatically go back to the checkout page for the customer to see the effect of the currency  change. The customer then simply has to go through the checkout  process and pay for the goods using the new currency values.

Foundry Mail Order Service

We always try to get your mail order back in the post to you the working day after it arrives with us. There are two main reasons why this might not be possible: either we have had an overwhelming number of orders placed (usually because we have recently released several popular packs, collections etc), or because we are temporarily out of stock of part of your order and have scheduled the item for casting production. In either case we will notify you that there will be a short delay and, depending on the delay period, will either hold back the order for a very short period whilst the missing packs are put back into stock, or we will send you the packs we have in stock and forward the missing items immediately they are back in production; we will not delay sending the balance by more than a week and will never make any additional postage or shipping charge. On rare occasions one or more of the packs in your order may be out of production waiting for a new mould to be made, in which case we will reimburse you.

Postage

Many companies in our industry treat postage as a variable cost item based upon order values and use a percentage value of the order as a basis for the postage charge; we feel that this is an unfair method of charging as there are many fixed as well as semivariable and variable costs in its calculation - the fixed costs include for example the costs of processing the order, invoicing the order, etc etc, the semi variable costs include for example the packaging and picking time etc etc, the variable costs for example relate to insurance, the postage and processing cost itself as well as other things.

To apply some formula for the recovery of these various types of costs would not only be difficult to apply but would also be so convoluted to explain that we feel that it could only lead to customer confusion.

We at Foundry feel that for clarity and understanding there is a need for the Postage charge to be as simple and as clear as possible and feel that, in view of the above, that a fixed cost recovery charge is the simplest method to apply to all orders.

Consequently we asked those people that are good with numbers and statistics to come up with a fixed price for UK orders that is the fairest value to apply to all orders; they used historical data from our database of order values and order quantities to arrive at this number; this is the value we use and will continue to apply to all of our orders subject to changes in the costs and order breakdowns and volumes themselves.

The POST FREE order value

We at Foundry make no secret of the fact that we would prefer orders to be as large as possible (which company wouldn’t!!) and as an incentive to customers to make those larger orders set an order value level from time to time that is POST FREE.

This POST FREE level can be viewed as many different things but is in effect simply best thought of as an order volume discount.

What are Foundry Miniatures?

Aproximately 28mm tall hand cast metal models made using traditional lead-tin alloy, ideal for modellers, gamers, collectors, diorama builders and painters. THEY ARE NOT TOYS. All models are supplied unpainted and because our models contain lead they are not suitable for children under 15. Retain packaging for future reference.

Foundry Models are hand cast in Nottingham, England!

What is a blister pack?

It’s called a ‘Blister’ simply because the models are packed in a clear plastic bubble that resembles a blister. Due to the huge diversity of our models the Blister pack contents may vary but, for the majority of our packs, an infantry blister pack contains either six infantry character models or eight infantry non character models. A cavalry blister pack generally contains three riders and their horses.

What is a Foundry Unit Deal?

A Unit Deal consists of three identical Blister Packs; they provide a great way to build up you regiment or army at discounted price.

What is a Foundry Collection?

A Collection is a set of eight (usually) blister packs which we believe go well together; they are more cost effective than buying blister packs separately and….even better….are normally Post Free!!

What is a Foundry Horde?

The Foundry Hordes have proved to be a very popular way for customers to get hold of our models en masse and provide excellent value. Normally containing 30 cavalry or up to 70 infantry models they’ll enable you to build the bulk of an army instantly, and we’ll select the models carefully to ensure you receive as few duplicates as possible.

What is a Foundry Infantry Regiment?

Most Foundry standard sized Infantry Regiments contain twenty four infantry models made up of officers, musicians and standard bearers (we try to put them in a mix relevant to the period they represent) as well as any relevant elite or flank company models - the remainder of the pack being made up of rank and file models

What is a Foundry Cavalry Regiment?

Cavalry regiments normally contain twelve riders and their horses made up of officers, musicians and standard bearers (we try to put them in a mix relevant to the period they represent) as well as any relevant elite or flank company models – the remainder of the regiment pack being made up of rank and file cavalry models.

What is a Foundry army?

We have been discussing with our customers the most appropriate unit sizes for the various nations with the ratio of 1 model representing 20 actual men being pre-eminent for army collectors. This size we feel gives units a solid, beefy and chunky feel; infantry are normally in units of 32 models with cavalry models often in slightly smaller units - artillery typically consist of four guns and crew. Within the armies each unit has been cast specifically with relevant numbers of Flank companies, officers, ensigns and musician.

Contents may vary within each troop type; if it shows twenty early Hussars, then you will get twenty early Hussars but the models may have head variants that we have not shown.

The Army Deals we have put together make an ideal starter force or are a great and convenient way of expanding to your existing collections….as well as being far cheaper way of building your armies than buying individual packs.

Foundry Products: Paints

What is so special about Foundry Paints?

Here at Foundry, we've been propelled into manufacturing our own densely pigmented water-based acrylic paints by our desire to fulfil two separate objectives:

Paint quality and colour range –

Nobody seems to make paints that really cover your model; the density of pigment just isn't there any more.  The palette we use for our own painting just doesn't exist in other people's paint ranges either.
Customers are constantly asking how we achieve the painting style we show in our catalogues, release sheets and adverts.  For years we've been trying to explain how we mix the colours and apply the layered shading techniques developed by our own Kevin Dallimore!

So, we were left with little choice but to develop our own paints, and present them as a self-explanatory system that allows our customers to easily adopt the mechanics of our in-house shading method, and our own particular colour palette.
We don't like seeing garish models that offend the eye with sickly brightness, but we really enjoy presenting our models in such a way that they have a gentle, warm glow.  As most of our models are of a military nature, they feature a range of colours that could be simply drab and dull, but we mix pleasant, warm buffs and tans, sophisticated earthy and stone shades and gently glowing reds, blues and greens.

Many of our customers tell us they have a problem mixing their shading colours. They are disappointed when their models take on a dirty, murky tone when shading is applied, and when they cannot find a complimentary highlighting shade that brings out the three dimensionality of the sculpting.

We have manufactured the range of colours we wanted to be able to buy straight off the shelf, and we've arranged the colours in sets of three; each providing a main colour teamed up with the shade and highlight that we would choose to use ourselves, so you'll never have to mix any of the colours yourself.

Kevin Dallimore has written a painting guide, illustrated with stage by stage colour photographs of our models, showing exactly how we go about painting in the Foundry manner

What are Foundry Books?

The Military History Books are:

A series of definitive military reference books with drawings edited by the renowned author Ian Heath; there are volumes covering the armies of a variety of periods and nations, presented normally in an A4 sized hardback format with traditional linen and glittering gilt binding.

These books are a must for anyone interested in the detailed history of the respective periods that want lots of additional information not normally found in general tomes.

The Wargames rule books are:

A series of books of different historical periods which have a similar format; they normally contain not only a set of wargames rules that are fun to play but also sections detailing the history of the period, painting guides of period models and lots of pictures of miniatures painted to an excellent standard.. These books are written in such a way that novice and experienced wargamers can get the most enjoyment from painting and gaming with their painted miniatures.

The Painting Guides are:

Articles or books detailing tips and techniques used by world renowned miniature painters to get the best finish to the painted models.

What are Foundry Modelling Tools?

These are what any novice or experienced modeller would need in order to provide an added extension to their hobby; all the tools that are needed for model conversions, terrain making for the creation of a table top battlefield or the creation of a diorama/vignette, are available.
